The Day My Deodorant Gave Me a Rash…

Confession Time.

This might come as a surprise to you, but...I can't wear half the deodorant we make here at SmartyPits Headquarters. My skin is too sensitive for baking soda based deodorants.

If this is you too, read on...because luckily, we have a solution.

It all started about 2 1/2 years ago.

I'd been using our standard formula deodorant for a few years--at the time it was the only formula we offered. Our standard formula utilizes baking soda to help control odor, and for most people, baking soda is an incredibly effective option. But for a percentage of the population, baking soda can cause irritation.

I had no idea that sensitivity to baking soda could be something that changed over time until it happened to me. It was shortly after a pregnancy ended, and my hormones were still in flux. I noticed I was getting a red, itchy rash from my baking soda deodorant, so I began to do some research.

IT WAS THEN THAT I LEARNED THAT SOME PEOPLE ARE SENSITIVE TO THE ALKALINE NATURE OF BAKING SODA ON THEIR SKIN.

Who knew?? Well, apparently my red, itchy armpit did! That was when I first began working with various baking soda free formulations to see what might work best as an alternative to my baking soda formula--which, incidentally, was a formula I'd also come to love using every day. I researched and formulated and researched and formulated some more.

Finally after trying many different clays, powders, and ratios, I formulated what has since become our Sensitive Skin SmartyPits, powered by magnesium instead of baking soda. I've been using it ever since, and it's been as effective for my skin chemistry as the standard formula (and it's even a little smoother). I'm so happy to have an aluminum-free option that works for my baking-soda-sensitive skin!

Sound familiar?

If you've ever had a reaction to a baking soda based deodorant--including ours!--it's very possible that our sensitive skin formula might be just what you need. Baking soda sensitivity might cause itchiness, rash, and sometimes darkening of the skin. It simply means your skin chemistry needs something different.

Same scents. Same price.

Every scent you love from our standard formula is also available in our sensitive skin formula. And we don't make our sensitive skin collection more expensive either--after all, baking soda sensitivity is not your fault! You shouldn't be punished by paying a higher price.

And if you're unsure...

We have an awesome collection of mini-sizes for every single scent (you can even buy a 4-pack and save!). Try it out before investing in a larger stick to make sure it's right for you.
